For coastal exploration from the Chianti region, focus on the Maremma area south of the Chianti hills. Top choices include Castiglione della Pescaia, Porto Santo Stefano on the Argentario Peninsula, and Follonica. These offer a mix of beaches, charming villages, and easy access from the Chianti area.

Castiglione della Pescaia: A charming coastal town with a sandy beach, known for its medieval castle.
Porto Santo Stefano (Argentario Peninsula): Part of the Argentario Peninsula, known for its beautiful beaches and waters.
Follonica: Offers a mix of beaches and historic sites, including the ruins of an ancient Roman town.
Piombino and the Golfo di Baratti: Great for exploring the northern Maremma coastline, offering sandy beaches and historical sites like the Etruscan town of Populonia.
Marina di Grosseto: Another option with a wide, sandy beach, known as a Blue Flag Beach.
Orbetello: On the southern end of the Argentario Peninsula, known for its lagoon.
Talamone: A smaller, charming fishing village on the Argentario Peninsula.

Florence

Florence, capital of Italy’s Tuscany region, is home to many masterpieces of Renaissance art and architecture. One of its most iconic sights is the Duomo, a cathedral with a terracotta-tiled dome engineered by Brunelleschi and a bell tower by Giotto. The Galleria dell’Accademia displays Michelangelo’s “David” sculpture. The Uffizi Gallery exhibits Botticelli’s “The Birth of Venus” and da Vinci’s “Annunciation.”

Maremma Regional Park (Near Talamone)

One slice of the rugged Maremma region in Tuscany is known for its “butteri” (cowboys) and wildlife: mules, timid roe deer, foxes and others wander in the wild amid the scents and colors of Mediterranean shrubbery. This is the Natural Park of Maremmaa 9,000 hectare green oasis extending along the stretch of coast between Principina a Mare and Talamone, in the municipalities of Grosseto, Magliano in Toscana and Orbetello.

Elsa Trail and Diborrato Waterfall in Tuscany

The Elsa Trail (Sentier Elsa) is a stunning, secluded walking path along milky blue waters and waterfalls. This enchanting site is tucked away in central Tuscany, close to Siena, at a small village named Colle di Val d’Elsa. At the end of the 2.5-kilometer trail, you are rewarded with the 15-meter high Diborrato Waterfall. Unlike the Saturnia Hot Springs in Tuscany, the waters of the Elsa Trail are cool and perfect for a dip after a hike on a warm day.
